My Gear

I don’t think I’ve ever shared my go-to carry where it comes to gear, So I’d like to share that will all of you! I like to keep my gear light and pretty much want to be able to carry all of my gear easily, sometimes even without a backpack. This is why I usually only carry one lens, and some batteries, It’s very rare that I’ll change my lens throughout my day (this of course is usually just when I’m out with my camera or shooting an event and have to be quick. If I’m shooting portraits or something a little more slow and peaceful I’ll have more gear, maybe even some lights)

My go-to gear is this;

Sony a7iii

I’ve loved this camera since the day I bought it. It’s an absolute workhouse that provided me with everything I need, allowing me to take great photos and videos. I love the size of the camera too allowing me to carry it pretty much anywhere without wearing me down too much. I learned photography on a sony a6000 so upgrading to the a7iii felt natural and I was able to pick it up relatively easily.

Sigma 24-70mm 2.8

I’ve been in love with this lens since the day I bought it. The images it’s able to produce are on another level, the ability to zoom is not something I’d had since starting my photography journey (since I was a prime guy for a long time) and it’s made my event and BTS work just so much better. I’ve been a huge fan of Sigma since getting the 30mm 1.4 for my a6000. I love the build and feel of their products and truly feel their image quality is unmatched for the price.

Sony 85mm 1.8

This is my backup lens. For a while, this was my main lens. I’m a huge fan of long focal lengths (my 24-70 stays fully extended at 70 for most of its life.) I found my love for long focal lengths and the background compression that comes with it when I bought a 135mm vintage lens for my a6000. This one is primarily used for portraits and street photography these days, any shoot that I know I’ll have time to get a proper distance and set up a great composition. The Bokeh from this little guy at 1.8 is great for portraits and I’ve been very happy with the results for the price. It’s got a sturdy build inside of a small body that makes it perfect for carrying on long trips. This was my main (and only) lens on my trip to El Salvador because of how light it is, perfect for carrying all day and even packing in my backpack.

Tiffen Black Pro-Mist Filter 1/4

I love this little thing. I only have one fitted for my 24-70, and it lives there full time. There is not a photo or video I can think of taken in the last year that hasn’t been through this filter. I love the subtle haze it adds to the image, especially with how sharp of an image the a7iii is able to produce. Also, I got it for free which makes it even better.

Taken with the 24-70mm with Pro-Mist Filter, also available for purchase! Click the photo for a link to my shop.

Misc gear that doesn’t need a paragraph

2 batteries (Needed)

2 128gb sd cards (yes)

Tiny Aperture Pocket Light (it’s cool for a little fill)

A GorillaPod (doens’t get used much but I usually keep it in my backpack)

A Multitool (primarily when for when I’m on set but good to keep around)

Work Gloves (Same as the multitool)

Leather Camera Strap (it has my name on it it’s cool)

And that is really all I carry with me. I’m not a huge fan of carrying a lot of gear and I’m a firm believer you don’t need a lot of gear to make a great image, you need the vision of what you want to make and the drive to make it.

Beautiful images can be made by anyone with any camera, don’t let anyone tell you differently.

Thanks for reading,

Doug
